Changing development discourse

Having been influenced by the 2011 ‘Finding Frames’ report and the momentum of the Progressive Development Forum, at Health Poverty Action we have been trying to take a more progressive approach to how we communicate.

In particular, we have been trying to heed suggestions in the Finding Frames paper by avoiding the frame of poverty reduction as a transaction, avoiding the concept of the causes of poverty being internal to poor countries, and appealing to people’s values of social justice and equality rather than self interest.

It hasn’t been straightforward, the right answer hasn’t always been obvious, compromises have been made, and there are definitely areas we can improve on. But it’s a learning process.

This is a link to our latest newsletter, any comments on how well we have done and ways we can improve would be much appreciated.

And if other NGOs are taking a similar approach, please let us know how you’re doing!
